Movie sequels rarely measure up to their predecessors. A push for bigger and better often results in loss of character.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen starring Shia LaBeouf is now in production. Should fans of the Transformers worry about the next installment? Megan Fox, who plays Mikaela Banes in the films, recently told Larry Carroll of MTV Movies Blog the sequel "is 10 times as big, 10 times as many set pieces, explosions and acrobatic stunts." The first film had a winning combination of these elements; increasing the action factor won't necessarily increase the quality. A Fresh Meal Not Overcooked LeftoversThe fast pace and special effects of the first movie inspired awe and engaged our imaginations. We formed bonds with Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), who suddenly held the fate of Earth in his hands, and Bumblebee, the car that transforms into a giant robot. Fans want more. If the filmmakers relegate the characters to window dressing and push more action for action's sake, the result might disappoint. Sure, we love special effects, but we must sympathize with the human and/or alien elements or the explosions become noise. Fear Not, At Least Not YetThe writer's strike held the script for Revenge of the Fallen at its mercy. Bay (not a WGA member) told Fred Topel of Rotten Tomatoes he wrote a script as "a template" for the writers. The strike ended February 12, 2008 and writers Ehren Kruger, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman were free to take on the project. Filming began at the end of May 2008 and Megan Fox told MTV Movies Blog they've "been reworking the script" as they film. "We've just been going through and trying to do some character stuff for Shia and myself," Fox said. If Bay created a solid frame and the writers smoothed out the rough edges, it's a good guess that edits and revisions will fill in the gaps sufficiently. Everyone involved appears to be championing for more character development. The film's star, Shia LaBeouf, told Empire Online, "There's going to be a lot more characterization with the robots." So it seems fans can look forward to robot characters with more depth. The films producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura told IESB, "Michael wants to deliver a bigger experience for everybody." No doubt, the action and special effects will be massive but it's nice to know the characters aren't going to suffer for it. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is scheduled for release June 26, 2009 and stars Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro. References:
