The hotly anticipated 2nd Christopher Nolan Batman film The Dark Knight premiers in July. Pre-release buzz is gathering momentum.

The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan's follow up to Batman Begins, is ratcheting up the pre-publicity. After suffering the devastating loss of Heath Ledger, who plays the Joker in The Dark Knight, the film's publicity had stalled. Ledger's intense performance had been the subject of much excitement and speculation. Naturally the advertising was due to feature the Joker quite heavily. Sensibly, the campaign was reined in following Ledger's tragic death. Now, amidst much talk of how the film does justice to the legacy of Heath Ledger, he is back on cinema screens. The new Dark Knight trailer from Warnerbros.com presents Ledger in his full glory as Batman's arch rival the Joker.

Christian Bale on Heath Ledger

Christian Bale has praised Ledger's performance in The Dark Knight, and hopes the film will serve as a fitting tribute, although he is careful not to trivialise the matter. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bale talked about Ledger:

“....I'm absolutely fine talking about him. You know, I don't like kind of trivializing the tragedy in conjunction with an interview to do with the movie, which is clearly far less important. But Heath was a joy. He really was like that, because he was a very unique man...”

New Cast and Returning Faces

The Dark Knight re-unites many of the cast from Batman Begins. Gary Oldman is back again, as the just and decent cop Lt James Gordon, Michael Caine is back as Alfred the butler and Morgan Freeman returns as Lucius Fox. Joining them is an amazing cast of new faces. Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over from Katie Holmes in the role of Rachel Dawes, Aaron Eckhart is playing Harvey Dent/Two Face and Eric Roberts is Salvatore Maroni.

The story line of the new film is about Bruce Wayne/Batman attempting to rid Gotham of the remaining organized crime gangs that plague the city. He teams up with James Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, but their initial success soon falls prey to the attentions of a frightening new criminal mastermind known as the Joker.

Will the Sequel Stand Up to Batman Begins?

Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise looks set to follow the same tone of dark intrigue and urban realism he achieved with Batman Begins. The director spoke of his intention with The Dark Knight to Entertainment Weekly:

'What I've tried to do with this film...was to try and make the best film in the first place. The great sequels that I've enjoyed and looked up to over the years have managed to do that — there aren't many of them'

Fans will soon be able to see for themselves just what Nolan, Ledger, Bale et al. have achieved with The Dark Knight. The release date for the film is July 18th 2008.
