The American Film Institute has named the 'Top 100 Films of All Time." The "Top Ten Sports Films' cover a variety of sports. 'Raging Bull' was the number one movie.

The American Film Institute has recently named the "AFI Top 100 Films of All Time." The moves are categorized in to 20 different genres, with the top ten movies listed in each genre. The "Top Ten Sports Films of All Time" are a listing of movies about sports, such as boxing, baseball, basketball, golf, pool horse racing and bicycle racing. The number one pick is 'Raging Bull,' a movie about boxing in 1941. The top ten sports films, in order, are: Raging Bull, Rocky, Pride of the Yankees, Hoosiers, Bull Durham, The Hustler, Caddyshack, Breaking Away, National Velvet and Jerry Maguire.

The oldest movie on the sports list is 'Pride of the Yankees,' the story of Lous Gehrig, which was filmed in 1943. The most recent movie on the list is Jerry Maquire, filmed in 1996. The top ten sports movies cover a variety of different sports, but the number one sport on the list is boxing. Boxing the sport of choice in 'Raging Bull,' "Rocky' and 'Jerry Maguire.' Two of the sports movies are about baseball: 'Pride of the Yankee's' and 'Bull Durham.'

  3. Pride of the Yankees. The story of baseball player, Lou Gehrig,in the 1910's. Cast: Gary Cooper, Therese Wright, Babe Ruth, Walter Brennan, Dan Duryea. Director: Sam Wood. 1943
  4. Hoosiers. An unemployed college basketball coach, Norman Dale, gets a chance to coach a small town basketball team in Indiana. In spite of community resentment, Norman Dale inspires the team of young athletes. Cast: Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper, Sheb Wooley, Fem Persons. Director: David Anspaugh. 1986
  5. Bull Durham. This movie is a comedy about a minor league baseball team in North Carolina and the English teacher who selects one team member each year to mentor and seduce. Cast: Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Trey Wilson, Robert Wuhl. Director: Ron Shelton. 1988
  6. The Hustler . A brash pool hustler, 'Fast" Eddie Felson, travels from California to New York to challenge pool champion Minnesota Fats. Cast: Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, Piper Laurie, George C. Scott, Myron McCormick. Director:: Robert Rossen. 1961
  7. Caddyshack. Comedy about an elite country club and a gopher intent on destroying their golf course. Cast: Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Michael O'Keefe, Bill Murray. Director: Harold Ramis. 1980
  8. Breaking Away. High school graduates in Bloomington, Indiana, coasting between high schools and deciding what to do with their lives.   9. National Velvet. This movie is the story of a young girl and a horse that takes place in the English coastal village of Sewels in Sussex. The girl, Velvet Brown, rides her horse to victory in the Grand National Steeplechase. Cast: Mickey Rooney, Donald Crisp, Elizabeth Taylor, Anne Revere, Angela Lansbury. Director: Clarence Brown. 1945
  10. Jerry Maguire. Jerry Maguire is the top sports agent at Sports Management International who is master of his universe. Fortune changes when he is fired from his job and has to start all over, from scratch. Cast: Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding, Renee Zellweger, Kelly Preston, Jerry O'Connell. Director: Cameron Crowe. 1996
